Warkworth to the Peak District

The Peak District

Ferndale Cottage Endmoor Farm, Tagg Lane, Monyash, Derbyshire, Monyash.
Tue 9th July to Fri 12th July.

Rog's rave.
Ordnance Survey White Peak map is essential!! Or the AA Central Peak District walkers Guide    paper/folded may be good

The area was once a tropical sea shore. The northern half is all Sandstone....millstone grit (great mill stones)  and was the  silt coming off the Pennines to the coast.  This is now called the Dark Peak  ...if you venture up onto Kinder Scout you will experience the Dark Peak.

The White Peak is result of sea shell fossils making limestone!!!!!!

1 Perfect Start
From Monyash walk south down the Lathkill Dale. You can go as far as the village of Over Haddon (or rather in the dale beneath Over Haddon) cross the river and climb up the southern bank. Follow footpaths across fields to One Ash farm and then track back to Monyash.

2 Start in Youlgreave
Walk down (south) to the village of Bradford then turn left along the river path to village of Alport. At humpy bridge turn north on small road then after 200mts turn left on larger road. Take path on right in 200mts along the Lathkill river.  Follow river Over Haddon (or beneath it). Take same bridge as walk 1 across, up bank, and find paths back to Youlgreave.

3 Longer Walk
Drive out of Bakewell along A6 past Ashford in Water till you get to a car park on left where Monsal Dale meets A6. Get a bus up to Taddington.  Find roads/paths north to village of Millers Dale.   At river take paths/road and or old railway line to Viaduct below Monsal Head...(good pub there for evening meal)......go under viaduct and follow Monsal Dale to car.

4 High Country (more grunt,  need sunny day, no low cloud)
Park at Edale.  Climb up Pennine Way path onto Kinder Scout moor. Once on top, turn left along path that follows rim of moor.  After 4 or 5 km  drop down and follow lowland path back to Edale down Jacobs Ladder. Need good map.

Visit Peak District centre in Bakewell. Oodles of info.
Visit Haddon hall
Chatsworth house and estate

Pubs
Village pub in Sheldon - great food
Village pub in Beeley - great food
Pub  at Monsal Head - awesome views
Village pub at Foolow;  they use their own farm meat
Village of Eyam - plague village
Monyash pub OK  too.
The Royal Oak pub just across the A515 in Hurdlow is great pub for a feed.

Photos
Find Arbor Low   stone circle with 50 ley lines passing through  inc major N/S  and E/W.
Another half days stroll would be to park at Grindleford Station. Then walk up one side of the river onto the moor. Great ancient forest...sparkling fast flowing river.  Then back down other side. Classic old English scenery

Park at the top of Curbar Edge (another place where sandstone meets limestone).  Walk along edge  great pikkies both of stones and views of valley below. Then drive back roads to Fox House inn. Then drive to village of Hathersage. As you leave the moor, you will drive past "Surprise View"    looking down onto the Hope Valley....You can explore this driving to Castleton. Lots of limestone caverns there.

Grindleford

Padley Gorge

Curbar Edge

google all these names for info/pikkies etc

Purfect.  Real Peak District experience

also you are only 2miles from Arbor Low Stone circle, (a must visit).
just across A515, near Arbor Low, is a cycle hire place for access to the old Ashborne to Buxton railway line,  now a cycle/walking track.
south down the A515 and on other side of A515 is the exquisite village of Hartington where they make Stilton fromage.
Further south on A515 is the also great photogenic village of Tissington, where they dress the wells each year in late spring.
Dovedale is just before Ashborne,  a famous tourist beauty vista dale.

The valley floor
16 km, 450m ascent, 6-7 hours
Most day hikers take the path on the valley floor. A good easy to follow path winds through lovely beech and silver fir woods with cliffs flanking you on either side. You pass several fantastic waterfalls before the woods open up to meadows that are filled with flowers in early summer. The trail ends at the waterfall in the Circo de Soasa with Monte Perdido dominating the skyline above.

Faja de Pelay
22 km, 800m ascent, 8-9 hours
A spectacular path on the southern cliffs of the valley. Your day starts with a steep climb of an hour and a half up to a fantastic mirador with a birds-eye of the valley and the valley floor 600 metres below. With the hard work done enjoy one of the best stretches of path in the park as you contour around to the Circo de Soasa at the end of the valley, descending along the valley floor. Highly recommended with great views across to the Brecha de Roland and all of the 3000m peaks.

Faja Racon
11 km, 580m ascent, 5-6 hours
This path under the northern cliffs is overlooked by many visitors but it’s one of my favourites. You really get close to the cliffs walking directly underneath them and get an idea of the scale of the valley. There’s a lovely contrast between the bare rock of the cliffs on your left and the lush green woods sloping away to your right. There’s a good chance of spotting sarrios (chamois) on this route as well as lammergeier.

Faja de las Flores
16 km, 1150m ascent, 9-10 hours
A spectacular path a kilometre high on the northern cliffs needing a very good head for heights. A steep path ascends over a thousand metres passing two sets of ‘clavijas’ (iron pitons) on the way. At first there looks no place for a path but as you get closer the eroded band shows itself and you can see it winding it’s way along the cliff face. At only a metre or so wide with a 400 metre sheer drop to your right at all times this is not a route for the feint hearted. The traditional descent passes across a cliff face by using an extremely scary set of chains and pitons. Those that don’t fancy this can turn round and head back down the way they came. A superb hike.

The most representative feature of the town is its Roman Bridge, declared to be a Historic-Artistic Site in 1931. It has five arches, three of them pointed, and from the centre hangs a reproduction of the Victoria Cross.

Southeast, Picos de Europa National Park is home to trails, limestone formations and the high-altitude Lakes of Covadonga. Its rich birdlife includes golden eagles. At the edge of the park is Covadonga Sanctuary, with its twin spires. Nearby, the sacred cave Santa Cueva lies above a waterfall.

Claimed to be Spain's prettiest fishing village.

Cudillero is a small, picturesque fishing port which sits on the side of a mountain. Outstanding are its hanging houses with eaves and brightly-coloured windows perched on a horseshoe of steep cliffs around the port.

It has many routes with viewpoints, among which it is worth mentioning the walk to the lighthouse, La Garita, La Atalaya or El Pico. Its two most important buildings are the Gothic parish church, which dates from the 16th century and contains wonderful baroque carvings; and the chapel of Humilladero, which is the oldest structure in town. The fishermen's taverns, which are located in a narrow cobbled square next to the sea, are the main tourist attraction.
